The Red Ribbon Hat project

There are many people in our country with AIDS who are debilitated and impoverished. Many are homeless. The reality of this disease is that hundreds of thousands of people in this country are afflicted with it, and millions have died from it. I have recently been involved with some work at New Mexico AIDS Services (see link at right), and it has opened my eyes to the fact that although many Americans are affected by this illness, my world of Suburban America is largely unaware and/or unwilling to talk about AIDS, let alone become involved in helping people who are afflicted with AIDS.

In 2007, my goal is to collect 100 knit or crocheted items, such as hats, scarves, mittens or slippers to donate to New Mexico AIDS Services next fall, for distribution in the Needs Of Life Bank. The Needs of Life Bank distributes food and other necessities to Men, Women, and Children who are in need due HIV/AIDS. If you are interested in knitting for this cause with me, please email me at

Suggestions: Items should be made from easy-care yarn such as acrylic or superwash wool. Most clients are adult men, but a significant number are women and children or families, so all sizes of items are welcome. Free Pattern Ideas
