The Housekeeper and the Professor

In between everything else this past week, I read a wonderful book. The Housekeeper and the Professor by Yoko Ogawa. It is a beautiful story which challenges traditional definitions of Friendship and Family. The Professor is a mathematician who suffered a traumatic brain injury and can only store 80 minutes of short-term memory. The Housekeeper is a young single mother who is hired to care for his household needs. It is at once humorous and touching, but it didn't make me sad. It made me think about relationships and the beauty in people.

In addition to it's literary value, I enjoyed the fact that it is only180 pages long, and therefore a manageable length to provide me with some escape from stress without feeling like a lot of work to read. It would be perfect to take on a plane trip, or to the beach, and you wouldn't even have to worry about your kids picking it up and reading it...no bad language, no sex, but still a nice story that will stay in your heart for a while.

Christy~

I'd love to read the book but probably won't be at our next meeting. Maybe you could remember to bring it on the next Monday we meet.
