Where are all the mothers in kids' movies?!?

We took the kiddos to see "Underdog" today. A pretty cute kids movie all in all, a couple of jokes for the parents, no content that I found inappropriate. It was an enjoyable afternoon.

However...

The main characters are a boy and his father who are struggling to get along after the mother's death. This made me think about the fact that nearly ALL of the kids movies involve a deceased mother. For example:
  • Bambi
  • The Little Mermaid
  • Finding Nemo
  • Cinderella
  • Lilo and Stitch
  • The Lion King (OK, that was a father, but I'm on a roll)
  • Tarzan
I know that you can probably think of more. So, anyway, What's the Deal? I think it is part of some great conspiracy to brainwash our children. (I'm not actually into conspiracy theories, but seriously, where are all of the mommies?!?)

I think it's a holdover from fairy tales, most of which star orphan children, partially because the Grimm brothers heavily edited stories that actually featured BAD mothers, killing off good mothers and making the bad ones into stepmothers or witches.

But also, I think that kids' stories are sometimes kind of ways for kids to try out some things that really scare them in a safe environment -- and nothing is scarier than a dead mom.
